Yiddish Song, Intermediate & Advanced
July 26 - Aug 1
10 a.m. – 1 p.m. & 3 – 6 p.m.
with Sasha Lurje, Craig Judelman, Sveta Kundish & Patrick Farrell, in collaboration with the Introduction to Yiddish Song workshop teachers.
Among the hundreds of musical rarities collected in the 1910s by the An-ski ethnographic expeditions to Ukrainian and Belarusian towns and villages, the vocal repertoire of nigunim, wedding song (badkhones) and liturgical song (khazones) occupies a very special place. Thanks to the work of the Kiselgof-Makonovetsky Digital Manuscript Project, our special guest of honor at YSW21, this music can once again be sung and heard, awakened to life after decades of slumber in the archives of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. After months of zoom meetings to begin working with these materials, YSW21 offers one of the first opportunities to meet in person, sing them together, and explore the path that leads from deciphering old manuscripts to creating powerful performances in our day of the music they offer us. As always, the workshop will also include work on vocal production, pronunciation, ornamentation, phrasing and style, performance and arranging, as well as related musical repertoires. Directed by four of the leading lights of today’s Yiddish music, Sasha Lurje, Sveta Kundish, Patrick Farrell and Craig Judelman – this workshop is for singers with moderate to extensive experience with Yiddish song and for instrumentalists interested in the very special art of accompaniment. Participants in this workshop will also have opportunities to work with the teachers of the Introduction to Yiddish Song workshop.
AND! We hope you’ll arrive a day early so that you can come to the official opening of YSW21 from 3-8 pm on July 25 at the egapark Erfurt at the BUGA! Further info to be found here.
