Introduction to Yiddish Song
July 26 - 30

10 a.m. – 1 p.m. & 3 – 6 p.m.

with Polina Shepherd & Lorin Sklamberg, in collaboration with the Intermediate/Advanced Song Workshop teachers.

This is a very special year to discover Yiddish Song at Yiddish Summer Weimar! A treasure trove of Yiddish music that was collected in towns and villages in Ukraine and Belarus more than 100 years ago has just become accessible after lying dormant in archives for decades. Thanks to the Kiselgof-Makonovetsky Digital Manuscript Project, we’re able to make it the centerpiece of the whole festival this year. Songs without words (nigunim), liturgical music (khazones), and traditional and popular songs face us from the pages of time-worn notebooks of ethnographic transcriptions, begging to be sung and heard again! This workshop takes you beyond the standard “hits” to the daily lives of people who expressed themselves in Yiddish song. Led by Grammy-award winner Lorin Sklamberg (of the Klezmatics), and the internationally celebrated Yiddish vocalist, pianist, teacher and choir director, Polina Shepherd (subject to Covid travel permission), this workshop includes opportunities to learn from the teachers of the Intermediate and Advanced Yiddish Song Workshop as well.  No prior experience with Yiddish Song is necessary, just a love of music and singing and an open mind and heart!

AND! We hope you’ll arrive a day early so that you can come to the official opening of YSW21 from 3-8 pm on July 25 at the egapark Erfurt at the BUGA! Further info to be found here.
